Pentagon leadership faces turnover as Army Secretary departs
High-level leadership turnover continues at the U.S. Department of Defense following the departure of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. Driscoll’s exit follows reports of ongoing tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth regarding military transformation and readiness efforts.
Reports indicate that Driscoll met with President Trump in late August to express concerns that Hegseth was blocking Army modernization by removing responsible generals. This has resulted in the Department of Defense having fewer generals than at any point in its recent history. While Driscoll acknowledged differences of opinion with the Secretary, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell dismissed recent media coverage of these tensions as false narratives.
In addition to leadership shifts, Hegseth has announced several new initiatives, including five new non-Ivy League partnerships and plans for a new autonomy command and acquisition executive within the Army.
