Pentagon plans massive deployment of millions of attack drones
The Pentagon is planning a massive expansion of its unmanned aerial capabilities, aiming to deploy hundreds of thousands of one-way attack drones this year and scaling up to millions in the coming years. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced this strategy at the Association of the United States Army's annual meeting, noting that the military is moving at an unprecedented pace to integrate artificial intelligence, robotics, and commercial manufacturing into its arsenal.
To manage this shift, the military intends to establish a four-star-led Autonomous Warfare Command, known as AutoWarCom. This new command will coordinate the development, acquisition, training, and operational use of autonomous weapons across all branches of the armed services, aiming to bypass traditional bureaucratic barriers that have historically slowed the adoption of inexpensive unmanned systems.
Financially, the Pentagon is seeking approximately $50 billion in additional funding to accelerate the production of autonomous and robotic systems. This request is separate from the fiscal 2027 budget proposal, which includes $53.6 billion dedicated to the ‘Drone Dominance’ initiative. The strategy represents a significant shift in procurement, prioritizing the mass production of affordable, effective drones over traditional, high-cost military platforms.
