Pentagon prepares defense budget of $1.1 trillion amid political friction

The Pentagon and congressional committees are reportedly developing a defense budget of approximately $1.1 trillion, a figure roughly $400 billion lower than the $1.5 trillion requested by the Trump administration. While the White House continues to publicly advocate for the larger amount to fund projects such as the “Golden Dome” missile defense system and a new fleet of nuclear-powered warships, military officials are internally preparing for a more modest funding scenario.

The administration had proposed a strategy to secure the full amount by using a budgetary reconciliation process to add $350 billion to a base request of $1.15 trillion, which would allow Republicans to bypass Democratic opposition in the Senate. However, internal Republican disagreements and stalled negotiations have complicated this approach.

Budget discussions are further pressured by the costs associated with military operations related to Iran. As of October 16, these operations have cost taxpayers $47.1 billion, with $29 billion allocated to munitions and missiles, $12 billion for direct military operations, and approximately $6 billion in equipment losses. Additionally, reports indicate that Iranian strikes have caused significant damage to U.S. military bases in the Middle East, with some estimates suggesting total repair and replacement costs could reach $15 billion.
