Pentagon updates US death toll in Iran war to 21 service members

The Pentagon has updated its Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) to reflect that 21 US service members have died in operations related to the war with Iran, an increase from the previously reported 18 or 19. The revised count includes two non-combat deaths: Army National Guard Maj. Sorffly Davius, who died in Kuwait on March 6, and an unidentified Navy sailor who died by suicide in September.

Additionally, the Department of Defense reported that 865 service members have been wounded during the conflict. The casualties are categorized into two groups: 15 deaths and 417 wounded during Operation Epic Fury, and six deaths and 448 wounded during other overseas operations.

The update follows intense scrutiny and reporting by The Washington Post, which suggested the official numbers were inaccurate. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had previously dismissed such reports as “a complete lie.” Democratic members of the House Armed Services Committee, including Adam Smith and Chrissy Houlahan, criticized the Pentagon for the discrepancy, stating, “There is no excuse for a mistake of this magnitude.”
