Pentagon Requests $80 Billion to Cover Iran War Costs Amid Defense Spending Debate

The U.S. Department of Defense has told senators it needs roughly $80 billion to cover costs from the recent military campaign against Iran. Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg briefed lawmakers, but the request has not yet been formally submitted to Congress. The funding would supplement an already large Pentagon budget as the United States negotiates the implementation of an interim U.S.–Iran agreement and faces political scrutiny over the war’s expense and its incomplete settlement.

At the same time, analysts note that the Iran conflict highlights the broader cost of strategic unpreparedness, contrasting the United States’ ability to finance operations with France’s criticized defense budget. French officials are questioned for allocating around 2 % of GDP to defense while lacking sufficient munitions and operational capacity, underscoring the divergent approaches to military readiness in the wake of the Iran war.
