Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth launches tech initiative and faces execution livestream backlash

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has initiated two major developments within the Department of Defense. First, he appointed Elon Musk, Newt Gingrich, and Palmer Luckey to co-lead Project Meridian. This strategic initiative is a 120-day study, concluding in January 2027, designed to map future warfare domains and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology, to ensure technological dominance.

Simultaneously, the Pentagon faces significant backlash over a plan to livestream the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan by firing squad in December. The proposal has drawn bipartisan criticism from lawmakers and strong condemnation from Catholic leaders. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops described the decision as a “barbaric promotion of a culture of death,” while other religious figures expressed concern regarding the moral implications of the broadcast.
