Pentagon seeks fit, well-groomed troops for Hegseth speech

The Pentagon is requesting that commanders nominate servicemembers who meet specific physical and appearance standards to attend Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s ‘State of the Force’ address on September 30.

According to internal emails, nominees must meet the Army’s waist-to-height ratio and fitness tests, while maintaining ‘impeccable grooming and uniform standards.’ The selection process also emphasizes leadership quality, professional character, integrity, and discipline. Selected troops will have the opportunity to work out with the Secretary.

This directive follows Hegseth’s previous emphasis on military appearance, including past criticisms of ‘fat generals’ and ‘beardos.’ While Hegseth maintains that strict physical standards are essential for combat effectiveness, critics have expressed concerns regarding the focus on outward appearance and the potential use of troops to advance political priorities.
