Pentagon Under Scrutiny for Underreporting U.S. Casualties in Iran Conflict

The Intercept reports that the Pentagon’s official count of 423 U.S. dead and wounded in the war with Iran is significantly lower than the actual numbers. The investigation says hundreds of cases are missing from the Department of Defense’s casualty database (DCAS), including more than 200 sailors who suffered respiratory problems and injuries after a fire aboard the carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, as well as an additional injured sailor from the USS Abraham Lincoln.

According to the report, the official tally rose from 385 at the cease‑fire on 8 April to 428 before being inexplicably reduced to 413 on 21 April, with 15 wounded removed without public explanation. The Intercept also questions CENTCOM’s statement that only 13 U.S. service members died in combat and one died of a non‑combat‑related medical condition, suggesting a broader under‑count of combat‑related injuries and deaths.
