Pentagon's Quarterhorse hypersonic drone separates payload in successful test
The U.S. Defense Innovation Unit’s HyCAT program reported that the experimental unmanned aircraft Quarterhorse completed a safe external payload‑separation test during its fifth flight. The test demonstrated that the hypersonic‑capable drone can release weapons, sensors or other equipment without colliding with its own structure, a critical step toward operational use.
Quarterhorse, a quarter‑scale prototype powered by a modified General Electric J85 engine, has previously reached speeds of Mach 1.21 and is being developed toward Mach 3 performance. The program, accelerated four times faster than traditional military development, is funded through contracts with Hermeus totaling $23 million initially and $159 million in a later extension. Successful payload release moves the effort closer to a full‑size hypersonic combat system.
The Pentagon says the milestone shortens the timeline for future hypersonic aircraft that could carry armaments or reconnaissance payloads at extreme velocities.
