Penticton City Council explores AI to reduce traffic congestion
Penticton City Council has unanimously voted to explore the implementation of artificial intelligence to manage and reduce local traffic congestion. The motion, introduced by Councillor Campbell Watt, follows a presentation regarding a similar pilot project in Kelowna, which reportedly reduced congestion on Springfield Road by 40 per cent by optimizing traffic light efficiency.
Mayor Julius Bloomfield expressed interest in investigating the potential costs of implementing similar technology in Penticton, specifically mentioning Skaha Lake Road and Government Street as potential areas for application. City staff will report back to the council with further information on how the technology could be utilized.
In a separate unanimous motion, Councillor Jason Reynen requested that city staff provide data on traffic counts and congestion levels following a lane reduction on Skaha Lake Road that occurred earlier this summer.
