Penticton community unites to support Summerland wildfire evacuees

The community of Penticton, British Columbia, has mobilized to support thousands of residents evacuated from Summerland due to the fast-moving Bald Range wildfire. The fire, which expanded beyond 5,000 hectares in just three hours, forced the entire community of Summerland to flee their homes on August 8.

Penticton officials established evacuation reception centres, primarily at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre (PTCC). Local residents and organizations, including the Penticton Sikh Temple, churches, and non-profits, provided a steady stream of donations such as food, water, bedding, and clothing.

Penticton Mayor Julius Bloomfield noted a sense of complete unity within the community during the crisis. Local councillors praised the rapid response and the compassion shown by residents and staff, some of whom worked 36 consecutive hours to accommodate the influx of evacuees.
