Penticton council candidates debate tax hikes and bike lanes

Nineteen candidates for the Penticton City Council participated in an all-candidates forum hosted by the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce. The event, attended by over 400 people at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre, focused on key local issues including road infrastructure and taxation.

Candidates expressed significant concern regarding recent road changes. Lyle Brant called for a pause on all traffic-calming measures, while former mayor Andrew Jakubeit prioritized fixing problematic bike lane traffic tunnel designs. Lee Abel criticized recent infrastructure changes at Skaha Lake Road and Green Avenue, labeling them executional failures due to a lack of public engagement.

Taxation was another central theme. Candidates highlighted the 9.5 per cent tax increase that marked the start of the 2022-2026 council term. Janine Walker proposed an independent audit of city finances to identify potential savings and streamline costs.
