Penticton hosts largest reconciliation walk for residential school survivors
Over 1,000 people participated in the Walk for the Children in Penticton, marking the largest gathering in the five-year history of the event. Held on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the march was organized by the Okanagan Nation Alliance and the snpink’tn (Penticton) Indian Band.
Participants walked a two-kilometre route from central Penticton to the PIB Reserve and the Syilx Indian Residential School Monument. The monument, created by artist Smoker Marchand, stands on the site where local First Nations were historically forced to send their children to residential schools.
During the gathering, community leaders such as snpink’tn Chief Greg Gabriel and Syilx Residential School Survivor Committee head Roger Hall spoke about the importance of remembrance and the ongoing responsibility to protect future generations.
