Penticton to review Skaha Lake Road intersection redesign
Penticton City Council has voted to hire an independent traffic engineering consultant to review recent construction at the intersection of Green Avenue and Skaha Lake Road. The decision follows hundreds of formal resident complaints regarding increased congestion and dissatisfaction with the new road layout.
The current design, part of the Safe Routes to School program initiated in 2023, includes lane reductions on Skaha Lake Road, new painted bike lanes, concrete pedestrian islands, and revised traffic signal operations. The goal of the program, developed with School District 67, is to improve safety and slow vehicle speeds.
Infrastructure General Manager Kristen Dixon stated that restoring Skaha Lake Road to its previous five-lane configuration would cost between $150,000 and $200,000 and could be completed relatively quickly, provided work avoids the back-to-school rush. The independent consultant is scheduled to present findings regarding congestion, safety, and emergency vehicle access to the council on October 20.
