Penzberg installs Germany's first Muslim Friday‑prayer sign, vandalized

The Bavarian town of Penzberg placed new informational signs at its four road entrances that indicate the times of Catholic, Protestant and, for the first time in Germany, Muslim Friday‑prayer services. Imam Benjamin Idriz said the sign is a "sign of appreciation, equal treatment of religious communities and lived religious freedom" and described the initiative as a nationwide first. The signs resulted from a discussion between the mayor, local church representatives and the Muslim community to replace old faded boards. Additional signs are planned for other entrances.

Within days unknown persons spray‑painted the Muslim‑prayer sign black. Police have documented the damage but have no leads on the perpetrators. The city disabled Instagram comments after they turned into hateful and defamatory remarks. Mayor Thomas Kopf reiterated his support for the project and condemned the vandalism, saying it shows who is on the radical side of the debate. Idriz called the attack an expression of intolerance and urged dialogue and respect.

The episode has sparked both online criticism and praise, highlighting the town's effort to promote religious freedom and inter‑faith respect.
