Penzberg Museum Showcases Bernd and Hilla Becher's Industrial Photography
The Penzberg Museum has opened an exhibition dedicated to the industrial photographs of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Their work documents the region’s coal‑mining heritage, including the 1966 closure of the local mine when the last coal wagon left after 170 years of operation.
Following the mine’s shutdown, many former coal workers retrained and began building buses for the German manufacturer MAN. The former mining area was cleared; the spoil heap remains as a public recreation space. The museum, enlarged a decade ago, now attracts about 12 000 visitors each year and houses a core collection that also features paintings by Heinrich Campendonk.
Penzberg’s economy today relies heavily on the Roche pharmaceutical life‑sciences centre, which employs roughly 7 900 staff. Roche reports a 414 million‑euro investment in the centre last year and an additional 18 million euros supporting local business development.
