People Power Party criticizes Lee administration over Hormuz Strait deployment

The People Power Party has criticized the Lee Jae-myung administration for its indecisive approach regarding the potential deployment of troops to the Hormuz Strait. Party spokesperson Cho Yong-sul stated that the government is attempting to ‘test the waters’ rather than making firm diplomatic decisions, which is undermining South Korea’s international standing.

According to the opposition, the administration is caught between pressure from the United States, threats from Iran, and domestic political backlash from strong supporters. The party argued that the government has failed to provide a transparent explanation to the public or engage in sufficient social debate regarding the deployment of combat or non-combat personnel.

Individual lawmakers within the party also voiced concerns. Representative Ahn Cheol-soo criticized opposition members for what he termed ‘armchair pacifism’ that threatens the ROK-US alliance, while Representative Lee Seong-kwon accused the administration of using anonymous officials to gauge public opinion on a matter of national security to avoid direct responsibility.
