People Power Party delays re-examination of lawmaker disciplinary actions
The People Power Party's Central Ethics Committee is currently reviewing requests for re-examination regarding disciplinary actions taken against several lawmakers. The committee held a meeting to discuss the appeals of Rep. Kwon Young-jin and Rep. Seo Bum-soo but reached no conclusion, scheduling a follow-up meeting for the 30th.
Rep. Kwon Young-jin, representing Daegu Dalseo-byeong, was previously handed a 18-month suspension of party membership following a controversy involving the floor leader. If the disciplinary action is upheld, his district may be designated as an “accidentally managed party organization,” potentially triggering a competition for a new local committee chairperson ahead of the 2028 general elections. Kwon has stated he will continue to communicate with local members regardless of his status.
Rep. Seo Bum-soo received a 10-month suspension following controversial remarks. Other lawmakers facing significant disciplinary measures include Rep. Cho Kyoung-tae (2.5 years) and Rep. Jin Jong-oh (2 years), both of whom face practical inability to run in the next general election if the suspensions remain. Rep. Jin has already applied for a court injunction to suspend the effectiveness of his disciplinary action.
