People Power Party delays direct election plan for local chairpersons

The People Power Party is facing internal conflict over a proposal by leader Jang Dong-hyeok to implement a direct election system for local party chapter chairpersons. The plan involves the mass resignation of current chairpersons followed by new elections through party member voting to reorganize the party for the 2028 general election.

During a recent supreme council meeting, the decision to move forward with the proposal was postponed following significant pushback from party lawmakers and regional chapters. Many lawmakers expressed concerns that the move is a 'purge' intended to replace non-aligned members with supporters of the current leadership.

While the leadership maintains the reform is necessary to strengthen the party and center it on its members, senior lawmakers and several regional chapters have advocated for maintaining the existing selection process. The leadership intends to continue discussions and gather further opinions before revisiting the matter in a future meeting.
