People Power Party in South Korea battles over Jang Dong-hyuk disciplinary move

People Power Party (PPP) lawmakers warned that enforcing disciplinary action against party leader Jang Dong‑hyuk could add further pressure for his resignation. Lawmaker Park Jung‑hoon said, “If we enforce the discipline, reasons for Jang Dong‑hyuk’s resignation will keep piling up,” and argued that such a move would undermine the party’s credibility and deepen internal divisions.

Han Dong‑hoon, an independent member formerly of the PPP, claimed the party’s ethics committee is targeting not only Jang’s supporters but the broader anti‑Jang faction. He noted that a closed‑door ethics committee meeting will consider the disciplinary request and criticized the forthcoming amendment to the Information and Communications Network Act, calling it “unconstitutional and a serious distortion of freedom of expression.” The dispute highlights a growing split within the ruling party ahead of upcoming elections.
