People Power Party lawmakers reject leadership plan for local chapter overhaul

Members of the People Power Party have expressed opposition to a proposal by party leadership to overhaul local chapter chairpersons through a mass resignation and subsequent party member vote. While leadership, led by Jang Dong-hyeok, aimed to strengthen the party by making it more member-centric and replacing inactive leaders, lawmakers expressed concerns during a general assembly on the 21st that such a move could trigger internal conflict and division.

Instead of the proposed direct voting, party members reached a consensus to maintain the existing method of re-electing chairpersons through the local chapter steering committees. This decision follows intense debate regarding whether the new system would serve as a tool for premature influence over future election nominations. Floor leader Jeong Jeom-sik is expected to relay the assembly's decision to the party's supreme council next week.
