People Power Party pushes electoral reform and continues local council boycott
The People Power Party (PPP) is intensifying its opposition to current political structures and local council operations in South Korea. At the national level, PPP leadership held an emergency forum to advocate for the abolition of the semi-mixed member proportional representation system. Party members, including Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik and Representative Na Kyung-won, criticized the system as a product of political collusion that allows for the rise of satellite parties. They proposed pursuing the abolition of this system as a party platform, aiming to return to a parallel voting system to prevent what they term the distortion of public will.
Simultaneously, the PPP faction within the Geumcheon District Council has continued its boycott of legislative schedules. The party maintains that it will not return to regular sessions until the Democratic Party of Korea offers an apology and takes corrective measures regarding previous conflicts over council organization. The PPP claims the Democratic Party has unilaterally proceeded with council leadership elections and has failed to engage in meaningful communication to resolve ongoing disputes.
