PeopleFinders launches background check tool for dating

A new platform called ‘Stud or Dud’ has launched in the United States to provide background checks for individuals in the dating scene. Developed by the company behind PeopleFinders.com, the tool aggregates public records, courthouse documents, bankruptcy filings, tax liens, and social media posts to create a profile of potential matches.

Users can generate a report using only a name or phone number. The reports are categorized into finances, property or assets, employment history, and criminal background, and include an AI-generated overview that identifies potential ‘red or green flags.’ PeopleFinders CEO Amber Higgins stated that the tool provides information to help users decide for themselves if certain findings constitute a red flag.

A recent study by datingadvice.com highlights the growing trend of digital vetting, noting that 40% of surveyed individuals admit to looking up the criminal and court records of potential dates. The study found that 38% of women and 36% of men perform these checks, with the highest usage among those aged 18 to 24 (46%). Approximately 8.5% of those who conducted a background check reported canceling a date based on their findings.
