People’s Bank of China sets USD/CNY reference rate at 6.7878

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the USD/CNY central reference rate for the current trading session at 6.7878, a slight adjustment from the previous day’s fix of 6.7888.

China utilizes a managed floating exchange rate system where the renminbi is permitted to trade within a prescribed band of plus or minus 2% from the official midpoint set daily by the central bank. The PBOC determines this midpoint based on various inputs, including previous closing prices, international foreign exchange conditions, and domestic economic factors such as capital flows and financial stability.

The daily fixing serves as a significant policy signal for Asian foreign exchange markets. A stronger-than-expected midpoint often suggests the PBOC is countering depreciation pressure, while a weaker fixing may indicate tolerance for a softer currency in response to economic headwinds or US dollar strength.
