People’s United Party holds Belize City municipal convention

The People’s United Party (PUP) is holding its Belize City municipal convention this Sunday to select candidates for next year’s municipal elections. The convention will feature 787 delegates voting for a mayoral candidate, while 19 candidates compete for 10 available spots on the councillor slate.

The mayoral race is a contest between Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller and Councillor Allan Pollard. Pollard, a three-term city councillor, is campaigning on his deep community roots and accessibility. Miller is highlighting his progression through the city council, from intern to deputy mayor, as evidence of his understanding of the institution.

PUP Chairman Henry Charles Usher expressed expectations for a strong turnout at the ITVET compound on Freetown Road. Usher noted that the party has seen high participation in recent conventions and addressed the delegate allocation for the Fort George and Pickstock divisions, which recorded endorsements rather than contested conventions.
