Pepe Viyuela leads bitter Shakespeare tragedy 'Timón de Atenas' at Castillo de Niebla Festival
The XLI Festival of Theatre and Dance Castillo de Niebla stages Shakespeare’s rarely performed tragedy Timón de Atenas on Saturday, 1 August. Directed by Hernán Gené and starring Pepe Viyuela as the title character, the production is co‑produced by the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida and Bombonera. It opens at 22:30 in the Patio de Armas of the Castillo de los Guzmanes, organized by the Diputación de Huelva in collaboration with the Ayuntamiento de Niebla.
The play follows Timón’s descent from generous benefactor to misanthropic exile, using contemporary staging that blends tragedy, satire, irony and comedy. Viyuela notes the work’s commentary on modern capitalism, highlighting how money can outweigh friendship and love in the story’s moral conflict.
The event forms part of the festival’s main programming, offering audiences a visual and emotional exploration of human ambition, betrayal and revenge.
