Peppino di Capri honored at funeral, officials praise his cultural legacy

Italian singer Peppino di Capri, a prominent figure in post‑war Italian popular music, was laid to rest on 12 July 2026. The funeral attracted wide public attention and highlighted his lasting influence on the cultural identity of the Gulf of Naples and the broader Mediterranean.

Naples prefect Michele di Bari delivered a ceremonial speech, describing the artist as a “favoured son” of Capri and emphasizing how his songs transformed local traditions into a universal language. He recalled historic reflections from Cicerone, Marcus Aurelius and Gustav Mahler, noting that “the life of the dead is sustained by the memory of the living” and urging the community to “guard the fire” of Capri’s artistic heritage.

The tributes underscored the singer’s role in narrating the landscape, hospitality and optimism of Campania, with iconic tracks such as “Champagne” continuing to evoke nostalgia and hope across generations.
