Peptides emerge as a gentle alternative in anti-aging skincare

Peptides are gaining significant traction in the skincare market as a gentle alternative to traditional anti-aging ingredients like retinoids. These small chains of amino acids act as messengers that trigger the skin to increase the production of collagen and elastin, which naturally decline as the body ages.

Experts highlight several types of peptides with specific functions. Signal peptides, such as palmitoyl pentapeptide, encourage collagen and elastin production to maintain skin firmness. Copper peptides are noted for their ability to support the skin’s natural repair process and aid in wound healing, making them suitable for skin compromised by over-exfoliation. Additionally, neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides like argireline are used to smooth fine lines caused by facial expressions.

Unlike exfoliating acids or retinoids, peptides are characterized by their deep hydration and low risk of causing redness, peeling, or irritation, making them an ideal option for individuals with sensitive or reactive skin.
