Per Mertesacker discusses Niclas Füllkrug's national team prospects

Per Mertesacker, the incoming Managing Director of Sport for the German Football Association (DFB) set to start on January 1, 2027, has expressed support for Niclas Füllkrug's potential return to the national team.

Speaking following a legends match at the Weserstadion, Mertesacker noted that Füllkrug is performing well in his role at Werder Bremen. While the 33-year-old striker is currently not being selected by national coach Jürgen Klopp, Mertesacker refused to rule out a future call-up, stating, “I never say never to any personnel matters.” He emphasized that performance and current form are decisive factors in professional football.

The comments were made during a celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Weserstadion, where Mertesacker played alongside other club icons in a match that Werder Bremen legends won 4-3 against Real Madrid legends.
