Perak authorities plan long-term reinforcement for Menora Tunnel highway slopes
The Perak state government has assured motorists that the North-South Expressway near the Menora Tunnel (KM 263.6 southbound) is safe following recent slope erosion. Immediate mitigation measures, including the installation of waterproof sheeting to prevent rainwater seepage and the diversion of water, were implemented by PLUS Malaysia Berhad and the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM).
For long-term stability, authorities are exploring several reinforcement strategies. These include slope structure reinforcement, the installation of steel netting in high-risk zones, and the potential use of satellite monitoring in collaboration with the Public Works Department to detect soil or rock movement. Additionally, officials are proposing the installation of 24-hour CCTV cameras at strategic locations and increasing patrol frequencies in vulnerable areas.
Perak Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin noted that proposals for these works may require additional funding through the Ministry of Works if the necessary scope falls outside existing maintenance agreements.
