Perak records 51 sick and six abandoned housing projects

Official data from the National Housing Department (JPN) has recorded 51 ‘sick’ projects and six abandoned private housing projects in Perak. According to JPN definitions, a ‘sick’ project is one that is more than 30 percent behind its expected progress or has exceeded the sale and purchase agreement period. Abandoned projects are classified as more severe, occurring when there is no significant construction activity for six consecutive months.

Perak Executive Councilor for Housing and Local Government, Sandrea Ng Shy Ching, stated that while primary jurisdiction falls under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) and JPN, the state government is taking a proactive role. The state has established the Sub-Committee for Monitoring Sick Projects and Recovering Abandoned Projects (JKPSPT) to coordinate between the Perak Housing and Property Board (LPHP), local authorities, land offices, and technical agencies.

Issues contributing to these delays include financial difficulties, land disputes, contractor problems, and infrastructure or utility constraints. The state government emphasized that while the responsibility to complete projects remains with the developers, the state aims to resolve administrative and technical bottlenecks involving land, utilities, and local authority approvals to help projects resume.
