Pereira residents warn of health risks from stagnant water and dengue threats
In Pereira, citizens and local merchants are reporting significant sanitation issues at Parque del Lago and various abandoned lots. Following an earthquake on August 10, several demolished properties have become sites for stagnant rainwater accumulation, creating potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Reports indicate that Parque del Lago is suffering from green-colored water, lack of cleaning, and an accumulation of solid waste. Merchants have also noted the presence of rodents and the misuse of public infrastructure by individuals using the water sources for bathing and other personal needs.
Health experts warn that the combination of heavy rainfall and rising temperatures—a scenario described as a ‘perfect storm’ linked to the Super Niño phenomenon—increases the risk of dengue and malaria outbreaks. Medical professionals emphasize the danger of the Aedes aegypti mosquito and the potential circulation of the DENV-3 serotype, urging the public to eliminate domestic water containers to prevent disease spread.
