Perera and Sons fined for selling expired bakery products
Perera and Sons (P&S) has issued a public apology following a court decision to fine the company Rs. 200,000 for selling expired bakery products. The company pleaded guilty at the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court after a Consumer Affairs Authority inspection on April 20 revealed strawberry-flavoured cream buns with an expiry date of April 16 being offered for sale at its St. Benedict’s Mawatha outlet.
Describing the incident as a “genuine error,” P&S stated it is reviewing the lapse and strengthening expiry-date checking procedures across its entire network. The company noted that while it maintains short shelf lives to ensure freshness, this practice requires increased vigilance. P&S has instructed its teams to exercise greater care to prevent future occurrences.
