Peretola airport expansion sparks political debate in Tuscany

Political tensions are rising in Tuscany over the proposed expansion of the Peretola airport in Florence. Forza Italia has submitted a motion to support the development, which is scheduled for discussion in the regional chamber next Tuesday. Marco Stella, the Forza Italia group leader, argued that the expansion is essential for economic growth, claiming it could double passenger capacity and create up to 5,000 jobs.

In contrast, the Democratic Party (PD) in Prato has expressed firm opposition to the project. Christian Di Sanzo, the acting secretary of the PD in Prato, stated that the party remains committed to its stance against the new runway, prioritizing the strengthening of rail transport instead. Regional Councilor Marta Logli also criticized the project, asserting that the expansion would harm the Piana area and threaten the Parco della Piana, a key green infrastructure for the region. She noted that the development would negatively impact the quality of life in several southern districts of Prato.
