Peretola airport expansion sparks political division in Tuscany

The proposed expansion of the Peretola airport in Florence has caused political friction within the ‘campo largo’ coalition supporting the Tuscany regional government. A recent resolution regarding the airport's runway expansion revealed a split in the majority: the Democratic Party and Casa Riformista supported the measure, while assessors from Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra and Movimento 5 Stelle voted against it.

Opposition member Enrico Tucci of Fratelli d’Italia noted that this division is a recurring issue when the coalition faces strategic decisions, citing previous disagreements over waste management and hunting.

Adding to the internal debate, the Giovani Democratici (Young Democrats) of Tuscany have expressed opposition to the new airport project. They argue that the heavily urbanized areas of the Florence and Prato plains are already saturated with infrastructure. They advocate for prioritizing rail transport, connections to Pisa, and the tramway system to protect the local territory and the Piana Park.
