Performance management and the role of employee reviews
Employee performance reviews are structured, documented conversations where managers and employees evaluate results, behaviors, and development priorities over a specific period. An effective review process typically follows a six-step lifecycle: defining criteria, collecting evidence and self-assessments, manager evaluation, calibration to reduce bias, holding the review conversation, and agreeing on future goals.
However, performance management often fails not because of the review itself, but due to systemic issues occurring before the formal meeting. Common failures include vague or activity-based goals rather than outcome-based goals, and a breakdown in continuous, honest communication. A critical distinction in successful management is separating job responsibilities—what an employee is paid to do—from performance goals, which focus on specific achievements and improvements.
