Performance management systems and organizational frameworks
Performance management systems (PMS) and employee performance management (EPM) are structured, ongoing frameworks designed to align individual efforts with organizational goals. Unlike a traditional annual performance review, which is a single point-in-time event, a modern PMS functions as a continuous operating mechanism.
A robust system typically involves a cycle of planning, monitoring, developing, rating, and rewarding. Key components include setting objectives and KPIs, tracking progress, providing real-time feedback, and using data to inform decisions regarding talent development, compensation, and succession planning.
Effective systems are characterized by being continuous rather than annual, two-directional to allow for employee visibility, and integrated with broader business objectives. When implemented well, these processes clarify objectives and motivate work; however, poorly designed systems can be perceived by employees as bureaucratic or time-consuming exercises.
