Performing arts festivals in Brazil highlight identity and representation
Brazil is hosting several regional performing arts events focused on identity and representation. In Maranhão, the first edition of the Festival de Artes Cênicas Preta do Maranhão is featuring book launches that explore themes of ancestry, memory, and Black and Afro-Indigenous resistance. Notable works include ‘Represas do Tempo’ by Tiyê Macau, which examines how knowledge institutions handle ancestrality, and ‘Centro de Artes Cênicas do Maranhão (CACEM): Memórias e Resistência de uma Escola de Teatro’ by Gilberto dos Santos Martins.
Simultaneously, the VI Maratona de Monólogos – Em Cena Elas is taking place in Canela from October 19 to 24. This event focuses on the presence of women in the performing arts through individual shows, workshops, and debates. Nine productions from the Canela and Gramado regions have been selected, with themes addressing female freedom, expectations, and gender roles.
