Pergaminho Flash challenges Vasp monopoly in newspaper distribution

The Portuguese government has launched a three-million-euro tender to ensure newspaper distribution in low-density population areas. This initiative, divided into two lots, is expected to challenge the existing monopoly held by Vasp.

Vasp has been the sole distributor in the sector since 2017, following the insolvency of Distrinews. The new competitor, Pergaminho Flash, was established in June by José Manuel Rogeira de Jesus and is led by Rui Marques dos Santos, a former operations director at Vasp. Pergaminho Flash aims to provide a credible national alternative and has already secured support from various media groups. The introduction of competition is intended to improve quality and efficiency for publishers and retail points.
