Periferias Festival 2026 launches cross‑border cinema event in Marvão, Portugal and Valencia de Alcántara, Spain

The 14th edition of the Periferias International Film Festival opened on August 7 at the Castle of Marvão, marking the start of a week‑long program that runs until August 15. The inauguration was attended by festival director Paula Duque, the president of the Câmara Municipal de Marvão Luís Vitorino, and Valencia de Alcántara mayor Alberto Piris. The opening film, “18 Buracos para o Paraíso” by Portuguese director João Nuno Pinto, was presented with a live introduction, followed by a concert from Portuguese musician Toni Ferrino.

The festival showcases more than thirty feature films and documentaries from ten countries – Spain, Portugal, Colombia, Bolivia, Morocco, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Argentina and Brazil – and uses historic venues such as castles, plazas, former railway stations and archaeological sites across the border region. Organisers emphasize the event’s role in linking the rural territories of the Iberian Peninsula, promoting cultural heritage, and fostering cross‑border cooperation between Spain and Portugal.
