Perimenopause confusion affects many women, prompting online community growth

A study published in the journal Menopause reveals that over 34% of women are uncertain about their current reproductive stage. This confusion is most prevalent among women aged 40 to 44, with 42% reporting they are unsure if they have entered perimenopause.

Perimenopause is the hormonal transition preceding menopause, affecting approximately 2 million women in the United States annually. Medical experts note that diagnosis is difficult because symptoms—such as sleep disturbances, weight changes, brain fog, and mood shifts—are often subtle and overlap with other conditions. Furthermore, hormone levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, meaning a single blood test may not provide a definitive answer.

Due to difficulties navigating the healthcare system and a lack of definitive diagnostic tests, some women are turning to online communities and AI chatbots to seek answers and connect with others experiencing similar symptoms.
