Hormonal transitions impact skin, mental health, and physical well-being

Hormonal transitions, such as perimenopause in women and andropause in men, significantly impact physical and mental health. In women, declining estrogen levels can lead to skin changes including dryness, loss of firmness, and reduced collagen production, affecting the face, arms, and neck.

Beyond physical symptoms, the perimenopause can influence psychological well-being. Gynecologist Konstantin Wagner notes that estrogen and progesterone affect the brain, potentially causing irritability, exhaustion, or mood swings. It is crucial to distinguish between hormonal fluctuations and clinical depression, as sleep disturbances caused by hot flashes can exacerbate mental health issues.

Men also experience hormonal shifts known as andropause, characterized by a gradual decline in testosterone starting around age 40. This can affect energy, mood, muscle mass, and sexual health, though the transition is typically slower than the female menopause.
