Perimenopause linked to increased cardiovascular risks in women
The perimenopause transition, which occurs before menopause, is linked to increased cardiovascular risks in women. During this phase, hormonal fluctuations can lead to changes in cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and abdominal fat distribution.
According to the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC), cardiometabolic diseases in women are often underdiagnosed and undertreated. In Brazil, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death among women, surpassing cancer. Symptoms of a heart attack in women may differ from traditional signs, often presenting as stomach pain, nausea, extreme fatigue, or cold sweats rather than radiating chest pain.
To mitigate these risks, health guidelines recommend a combination of regular aerobic activity and strength training. A target of 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week, paired with resistance training two to three times weekly, is suggested to maintain physical capacity and metabolic health.
