Perimenopause symptoms often recognized earlier than menopause

Obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Deniz Han Deniz suggests that the perception of women entering menopause earlier may actually be due to the earlier recognition of perimenopause symptoms rather than a biological shift in menopause age.

While there is insufficient data to claim the average age of menopause is decreasing globally, women are becoming more aware of hormonal fluctuations and associated symptoms. In Turkey, the average age for menopause is reported to be between 46 and 51, compared to the global average of 45 to 55.

Perimenopause is characterized by fluctuations in hormone levels, particularly estrogen, and can manifest through irregular menstruation, hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood changes, and concentration difficulties. Dr. Deniz emphasizes that perimenopause is distinct from menopause, noting that ovulation and the possibility of pregnancy can still occur during this transition. Menopause is clinically defined only after 12 consecutive months without menstruation. Symptoms appearing before age 40 are categorized as premature menopause and require medical evaluation.
