Periodontitis and its impact on athletic performance
A recent report highlights the significant impact of periodontal disease on athletic performance. Athletes suffering from periodontitis report performance declines approximately 1.5 times more frequently than those with healthy gums. The connection lies in the systemic inflammatory processes associated with gingivitis and periodontitis, which can hinder physical regeneration and overall capacity.
Several factors contribute to oral health issues in athletes. High consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods and acidic isotonic drinks can promote caries and erosion. Additionally, intense training often leads to mouth breathing and reduced saliva production, which weakens the protective salivary film. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, creating a continuous burden on the immune system and affecting training reserves.
