Periodontitis and type 2 diabetes linked in new systematic review

A large systematic review published in The Lancet Public Health has identified a potential bidirectional link between periodontitis and type 2 diabetes. The review synthesized data from 28 longitudinal studies involving over 300,000 participants across 16 countries.

Research involving approximately 29,000 individuals monitored over 5 to 20 years showed that those with periodontitis at the start of the studies had an 18% to 25% higher probability of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes later. This correlation was even more pronounced in individuals who had experienced total tooth loss, who faced a roughly 30% higher risk of developing the condition.

The relationship may also work in reverse, as individuals already diagnosed with diabetes showed an increased likelihood of developing periodontitis or tooth loss, though the evidence for this direction is considered less consistent. Researchers emphasize that while these findings highlight the connection between oral and metabolic health, the studies are observational and do not prove that one condition directly causes the other.
