Periodontitis Linked to Early Kidney Damage in German Study

A study by the University Hospital Hamburg‑Eppendorf involving 6,179 adults found a clear association between severe periodontitis and reduced kidney function. Participants with worsening gum disease showed lower estimated glomerular filtration rates and higher albumin‑creatinine ratios, even after accounting for age, diabetes, smoking and other risk factors. Researchers suggest that oral bacteria or systemic inflammation may damage the kidneys, indicating that periodontal health could serve as an early indicator of renal disease.

Separate guidance highlights the broader importance of oral hygiene: brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, using floss to clean interdental spaces, and limiting antiseptic mouthwashes to preserve beneficial oral microbes.
