Perla the mare recovers and gives birth after rescue from animal cruelty

A mare named Perla has successfully recovered and given birth to a healthy male foal following a rescue from animal cruelty and illegal activities in Santo Tomé, Argentina.

Perla was originally discovered in October 2025 by the Rural and Ecological Police during an investigation into cattle rustling (abigeato). At the time, she was malnourished, injured, and being used by criminals to transport stolen meat. Following a directive from prosecutor Dr. Martín Leiva, the mare was transferred to the Universidad del Salvador (USAL).

At the university, veterinarians and students provided medical care, nutrition, and rehabilitation. After regaining her strength and health, Perla has since transitioned to a life of freedom and recently gave birth to a strong, healthy colt.
