Permafrost Carbon Release Tipping Point Expected by 2100
New research shows that deep permafrost soils below three metres contain large carbon reserves that could shift the Arctic region from a carbon sink to a carbon source by the end of the century, earlier than earlier climate models predicted. The study highlights a gap in existing climate projections, which have largely overlooked deep‑soil carbon. If global temperatures are not reduced, thawing permafrost may emit more greenhouse gases than previously estimated, pressuring remaining carbon‑budget calculations. The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is incorporating these findings into its upcoming assessment report, underscoring the need to revise mitigation and adaptation strategies worldwide.
