Permanent diaconate sees sustained growth in the United States

The permanent diaconate is experiencing sustained growth within the Catholic Church, according to the 2025 report from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA). The report estimates that more than 21,500 permanent deacons currently serve in the United States, with approximately 15,000 remaining active in ministry.

Since its restoration by the Second Vatican Council, the diaconate has become a significant element of parish life. Deacons perform various roles, including proclaiming the Gospel, baptizing, witnessing marriages, presiding at funerals, and providing service to the poor, hospitals, and prisons.

The data indicates that the vocation is becoming increasingly diverse, with a growing percentage of Hispanic deacons. Additionally, educational standards remain high, with over two-thirds of deacons holding at least a college degree. Dioceses are responding to this trend by expanding formation opportunities, including programs offered in Spanish, to better serve a culturally diverse population.
